Vitanova Biomedical’s technology platform is called Light-Activated Intracellular Acidosis (LAIA)
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a therapeutic treatment that utilizes a drug, called a photosensitizer or photosensitizing agent, in conjunction with a particular wavelength of light. When photosensitizers are exposed to a specific wavelength of light, they produce a chemical reaction. VNB’s LAIA technology platform applies PDT utilizing the chemical compound o-nitrobenzaldehyde (o-NBA). The compound o-NBA is injected into the cancer tumor and allowed to diffuse into the tissue. Then a beam of light is aimed at the tissue triggering the cancer cells to rapidly become very acidic inside. This high-level of cell acidity causes apoptosis (programmed cell death).
— Our data show no adverse effects of the presence of o-NBA inside cells. Additionally, the exposure to light does not have any detrimental effects.
— When activated by ultraviolet light, o-NBA creates a very rapid intracellular acidosis.
— Cancer cells cannot recover from the magnitude of the photo activated acidosis, therefore the cells undergo apoptosis.
— Our technology is not cancer specific. To date, we have utilized this technology to effectively kill the following cancers in the petri dish (in vitro):
- -MCF-7 – a form of breast cancer
- MDA-MB-231 – Triple Negative breast cancer
- 22RV-1 – a common form of prostate cancer
- LnCAP – a hormone-sensitive form of prostate cancer
- BxPC3 – a form of pancreatic cancer
— We consistently see greater than 80% cancer cell death within the first two hours following ultraviolet light treatment.
— We observed 98% cell death in pancreatic cancer cells within the first three minutes following the ultraviolet light treatment.
— Our therapy has been used successfully (in mice) to cause:
- A significant reduction in triple negative breast cancer tumor growth.
- The doubling of survival time.
— Based on these data, we believe that we can utilize this technology to treat any cancer, provided we can inject the compound into the cancer, and photo activate the tumor.
— We believe our technology will kill multi-drug resistant cancers.
